History

The city was founded by newspaper and railroad man Alexander St. Clair-Abrams in 1880 and named for a Portuguese ancestor. While St. Clair-Abrams did not achieve his dream that Tavares become the state capital of Florida (Tallahassee has held the spot since 1823), in 1887 the city was named the seat of Lake County. St. Clair-Abrams later chartered a railroad to run from Tavares to Orlando.

Tavares is often referred to as the hub of Lake County in Central Florida. Not only in location but in business, government and culture as well. This small, charming town is surrounded by the gently rolling hills and numerous lakes of Lake County. Attractions abound in the area, along with country scenery and fresh air making it a very enjoyable escape from city life. Children love visiting Uncle Donald's Farm where you can meet adorable farm animals up close, or the Amazing Exotics Education Center which has more than 300 exotic and endangered animals on view. The Trout Lake Nature Center has picnicking, hiking and environmental education opportunities, and you can be a cowboy for a day at Fiddler's Green Ranch, where National Mounted Police horses are trained. Eighteen beautiful golf courses are located near Tavares, and wine-tasting tours are available at Lakeridge Winery & Vineyards. The town of Tavares is host to the annual Downtown Fall Festival at the end of October, and the Light Up Celebration, usually held in late fall. In Tavares, you will find secluded resorts, romantic bed & breakfasts and beautiful historic inns. All the peace and relaxation of the countryside? Just a short drive to the excitement of Orlando.

Central Florida, surrounding the Orlando area, is situated 50 miles from the Atlantic Ocean and 75 miles from the Gulf of Mexico. One of the region's main attractions is the near perfect year-round weather. Mid-Florida's subtropical climate is warm and humid during the summertime with almost daily thundershowers. However, these storms are scattered and generally pass quickly and the sunshine soon returns. Average annual rainfall is over 50 inches per year, keeping Central Florida lush and green all year long. The average elevation of this area is 127 feet above sea level and prevailing winds are southerly at nine mph. Winters in Central Florida are delightful, with warm days and mild evenings, much less humidity than summer and lots of sunshine.

Tavares Attractions

Lake County Museum :The Lake County Historical Museum consists of an eclectic group of artifacts typical of the people who pioneered and grew Lake County, as well as Native American and Spanish relics. Exhibits are added and changed regularly. Admission is always free.

Tavares has served as the County Seat for Lake County, Florida since 1888. The downtown, which lies on the shores of Lake Dora, has the small town charm lacking in most cities. Picturesque Wooton Park sits only one block from Main Street and offers families everything from picnic pavilions to boat ramps. Tavares is also home to the Dora Canal known as one of the most beautiful waterways in the world.

Amusement and Theme Parks :Orlando's tourist attractions are no secret. Walt Disney envisioned a theme park that would be larger and more expaned than Disneyland.
