History

In 1983, a plan was developed for the restoration of all of the beaches along Sand Key, the barrier island that stretches from Clearwater Pass to John’s Pass. The island of Sand Key contains nine coastal municipalities from the “Sand Key” portion of the City of Clearwater south to Madeira Beach.

In 1985, a nearshore emergent breakwater was constructed at the Redington Shores Beach Access, a Pinellas County Park facility. This structure was the first of its type in Pinellas County and the state of Florida. The cost of the structure was $569,000. Sand was also placed in the area from the navigational dredging of John’s Pass. The material was trucked to the site.

Temperate and mild, the central West Coast of Florida in the Clearwater/St. Petersburg/Tampa Bay area enjoys a semi tropical climate with warm Gulf breezes and plenty of sunshine. Frequent thunderstorms, short in duration, dominate the summertime weather patterns, where humidity usually hovers near the 100 percent mark. Even with these frequent summer storms, however, this area of the state enjoys the most days of sunshine per year - with an average of 361. June through September are the wettest months, with the rest of the year being pretty dry by comparison. The most pleasant weather is found during the winter months between November and March when the humidity becomes more bearable and winds from the Bay and Gulf keep temperatures moderate.

Sand Key is a barrier island located just south of Clearwater Beach and north of Belleair Beach along the central West Coast of Florida. The northern tip of the beach is home to Sand Key Park, which is well know for shelling on its beautiful, white sandy beaches and for fishing on the jetty. Sand Key bills itself as “14 Miles of Heaven,” where you can play on the beach or watch a stunning sunset, or picnic under the Florida pine trees that line the beach. Sand Key Park was opened in 1984 and is situated on 95 pristine acres between the Gulf and the Florida mainland. Clearwater Pass, leading from the Gulf to the Intracoastal Waterway, separates the park from the popular resort area of Clearwater Beach. The park has two distinct areas – the beach and the park. In the “park” are picnic shelters with grills, a children’s playground, fountains, a dog park and restrooms. The beach has bathhouses and showers, restrooms, lifeguards year round, beach wheelchairs and cabana rentals. All types of water sports are available, swimming, water skiing, shelling, diving, sailing and sunbathing. For those who prefer their excitement on land, Sand Key is near museums, shopping, world-class restaurants, golf courses, tennis courts and bike trails. The Crescent Beach Club is located just south of Clearwater Beach about 30 minutes from Tampa Airport. Due to limited access by the public, Sand Key Beach is very private. Enjoy sunsets from both the living room and the master suite. The unit is 1020 square feet with new oak flooring throughout. Sliding glass doors from the Master suite and living room lead out to large balcony with magnificent mile long views of the Gulf of Mexico and fantastic sunsets. Our association requires us to show a 2 week minimum stay. Check for shorter stay availablity and rates. Absolutely No Pets and No Smoking allowed in Unit or on Balcony.

Our exquisite Sand Key Condo Rental in Clearwater Beach, FL, just 25 minutes from the St Petersburg/Clearwater Int'l Arpt, is located on the beautiful Gulf of Mexico. This magnificent unit is located on Sand Key, just south of Clearwater Beach, across the bridge over Clearwater Pass.

Gulf Boulevard runs down the middle of Sand Key, which is a barrier island on the West Coast of Florida.

Less than a mile wide, the Western side of Gulf Blvd has sandy white beaches and a row of high rise condominiums. The Eastern side of Sand Key fronts on the Intracoastal Waterway. Condo's, townhouses, and single family homes line the East side of Gulf Blvd. most with boat docking facilities.

Commercial activity is focused on the North end of Sand Key. Two resort hotels and the Shoppes on Sand Key provide a variety of restaurants, shopping, banking, and resident and tourist services.

Sand Key County Park and the Clearwater Sailing Center attract many visitors and locals. A US Coast Guard station is located on Sand Key. And tennis courts and children's gym toys are available at the city Bayside Park

Sand Key is internationally known for its pristine beaches, fabulous food, and wonderful access to Tampa International Airport, the St. Petersburg-Clearwater Airport, Busch Gardens, and the NEW Florida Aquarium, Orlando, and the Disney attractions are just 90 minutes away. Day trips from our beaches to Universal Studios, Sea World and Cypress Gardens are very popular.

Naturally, we offer swimming, water skiing, diving sailing, parasailing, shelling...just about everything you can imagine in the fabulous waters of the Gulf on white sandy beaches. Cruises of all varieties are available.

Our cultural menu is world class from the Salivador Dali Art Museum to the Great Explorations hands-on museum for children. We have beautiful bike trails, tennis courts, golf courses and more for the active sportsperson. If you prefer to be a spectator, take in our hockey, football, basketball or baseball in the surrounding communities. Our beaches are just a short drive to the Thunderdome featuring professional sporting events.
