Palm Beach Attractions and Activities

History

Palm Beach was established as a resort by Henry Morrison Flagler,[3] a founder of Standard Oil, who made the Atlantic coast barrier island accessible via his Florida East Coast Railway. The nucleus of the community was established by Flagler's two luxury resort hotels, the Royal Poinciana Hotel and The Breakers Hotel. West Palm Beach was built across Lake Worth as a service town, and has become a major city in its own right. Flagler's houselots were bought by the beneficiaries of the Gilded Age, and in 1902 Flagler himself built a Beaux-Arts mansion, Whitehall, designed by the New York-based firm Carrère and Hastings and helped establish the Palm Beach winter "season" by constant entertaining. The town was incorporated on April 17, 1911.

Palm Beach is a kaleidoscope of golden beaches, lush green palms, tropical foliage and emerald-turquoise ocean. This region on Florida’s eclectic southeast coast is refined and flashy with gorgeous landscaping, designer boutiques, pricey jewelry stores and luxury cars. Many come here just to experience the superb service, excellent cuisine in elegant restaurants and upscale shopping. Palm Beach has 47 miles of white sandy beaches, romantic seaside cottages, charming inns and hundreds of hotels and motels. It’s a town with museums, cultural venues, an active nightlife and more than 2,000 restaurants. Shopping in Palm Beach is an adventure in itself, with two-tiered glass malls and a historical downtown shopping district with one-of-a-kind shops and boutiques. But there is another side to Palm Beach. Oceanfront parks offer picnicking, swimming, hiking and biking. Palm Beach County has over 1,100 tennis courts, and golf is a year-round activity at more than 150 golf courses. The area also lures lots of scuba divers where guideboats to reefs are based at area marinas. Palm Beach boasts lots of family attractions as well. Children will enjoy a drive-through animal safari, a small garden zoo, a science museum, boat rides and citrus-grove tram tours. So whatever you’re looking for, Palm Beach on Florida’s romantic south Atlantic coast is sure to meet your needs.

South Florida , in the Palm Beach area, has a combination of warm temperatures and high humidity that can be uncomfortable from May through September. Interestingly enough, however, even though south Florida is closer to the equator, it is usually a few degrees cooler than the northern part of the state due to cooling onshore breezes. Thunderstorms are the main source of rain in Florida, which has more of these storms than any other state. Their frequency and intensity usually peak in August and September, but they can continue into November in the southern part of the state. South Florida receives 70 percent of its rainfall during these months. The subtropical climate of this area enjoys delightful winters with warm, comfortable temperatures, low humidity, and lots of sunshine and tropical breezes.
