Lakeland offers another, different look at Florida - one of picturesque, swan-filled lakes, towering oaks and historic architecture. This lovely city has the world’s largest one-site collection of Frank Lloyd Wright designed buildings at Florida Southern College. Located between two major urban areas – Tampa Bay and Orlando – Lakeland has all the amenities of a larger city, yet with many of the characteristics of a smaller town. The “Polk Museum of Art” is located in Lakeland’s historic district and children and families are made to feel very welcome here. The museum is a cultural hub for the town. It features Florida artists, Georgian silver, Asian art and pre-Columbian artifacts. The sculpture garden, with its waterfall wall is an eye-catching display. From the museum, it’s an easy stroll next door to the public library on Morton Lake. The lake is the centerpiece for a beautiful city park and home to a flock of swans that nest on the shore every spring. Another interesting Lakeland attraction is the “Explorations V Children’s Museum,” that offers hands-on exhibits and activities for children ages 2-12. One of the region's main attractions is the near perfect year-round weather. Mid-Florida's subtropical climate is warm and humid during the summertime with almost daily thundershowers. However, these storms are scattered and generally pass quickly and the sunshine soon returns. Average annual rainfall is over 50 inches per year, keeping Central Florida lush and green all year long. The average elevation of this area is 127 feet above sea level and prevailing winds are southerly at nine mph.
