Key Largo, A Special Getaway

Originally known as Rock Harbor, in 1952, the most northward point in the Florida Keys, was renamed to Key Largo. Located in the Upper Keys, Key Largo is both the largest and most popular island of the beautiful Florida Keys.

While many consider Key Largo as the world’s best diving resort, this is largely due to the multitude of underwater fantasies present in the vast surrounding seas. The gorgeous waters with their exceptional attractions make Key Largo one of the most sought after vacation spots in the continent. The coral reef, accessible from John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, is a spectacular spectrum of superb sea sights. Fully stocked with various marine-life, the oceans of endless botanical wonders await. While discovering the fabulous waters, a historic 4,000-pound bronze statue of Christ of the Deep lies 20 feet below.

Whether it’s snorkeling, scuba diving, glass-bottom boat trips, or swimming with dolphins, the deep-sea expeditions in Key Largo are well worth enjoying. The exquisite waters feature dry sports as well, such as delightful sailing, plentiful fishing, scenic bike riding, adventurous canoeing, kayaking, and rafting. And, for the landlubber, offshore viewing of brilliantly colored fish and visiting our saltwater aquariums are popular pastimes.

Climate

Of the entire state of Florida, the Keys receive the lowest amount of average yearly rainfall. When it does rain, it comes in brief periods, often returning the skies to a beautiful, clear day for continued outdoor activities. As for brutal, humid, summer heat, you won’t find it in Key Largo. In the island’s history, the temperature has never exceeded 100 degrees. With the ocean breeze to keep cool, visitors love the reliable, balmy climate.
