Englewood Attractions and Activities

Geography

Fort Myers Beach is located at 26°26'19?N 81°55'32?W (26.438676, -81.925620).[3] According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 6.2 square miles (16.0 km²), of which, 2.9 square miles (7.4 km²) of it is land and 3.3 square miles (8.5 km²) of it (53.41%) is water. The town is situated across the barrier islands of Estero and San Carlos.

Estero Island and its sister island, San Carlos, make up the community of Fort Myers Beach. Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) is located southeast of the city in South Fort Myers, near Gateway and Lehigh Acres.

History

The Town of Fort Myers Beach recently celebrated its thirteenth birthday, but the history of Estero Island spans back over 2,000 years when the Calusa Indians constructed shell mounds along the bayside of our island. As the ruling chiefdom in south Florida, the Calusa resisted Spanish colonization including attempts by the conquistador Ponce de León in 1513 and 1521 (during the latter encounter he was mortally wounded by the Calusa). The Calusa met their demise almost 150 years later due to increasing hostilities, disease, and political and economic upheaval.

From the late seventeenth to the mid-nineteenth century the political landscape of southwest Florida was dynamic as the territory changed hands between British and Spanish control. Between times of turmoil, Cuban fishermen established small seasonal fishing villages known as Ranchos throughout southwest Florida, including Estero Island. By the mid to late 1700s, active trade was established between the Ranchos, Cuba, and Creek Indians who displaced the remaining Calusa. As Florida eventually became the 27th state in 1845, many of these families stayed and blended with the new American population.

Climate & Weather

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 40.4 mi² (104.7 km²). 31.8 mi²(82.4 km²) of it is land and 8.6 mi² (22.2 km²) of it (21.25%) is water. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration classifies Fort Myers as a subtropical climate [5]. Others interpret the Köppen climate classification to classify it as a tropical savanna climate (Köppen climate classification Aw),

The comfortable climate in Fort Myers Beach, Florida is no small part of its appeal. According to residents, October through April offers the most blissful weather of the year, when daytime temperatures are typically in the 70’s and 80’s (Fahrenheit). During the months of July and August, the average high temperature is a pleasant 91 degrees.

Fort Myers Beach Vacation Guide

Location: Fort Myers Beach is located on Estero Island, which runs along the Gulf of Mexico southwest of Fort Myers and north of Naples. Visitors fly into Southwest Florida International Airport. The island is southwest of the airport.

Attractions: The main attraction at Fort Myers Beach is, of course, the beach. Here you can parasail, jetski, rent a canoe or kayak or just take the sun in. At the Tours Information Center near the pier, you can book a boat cruise and beach activities. An excellent choice is Fort Myers Beach Cruises, located off the island on San Carlos Boulevard, next to Johnny Leverock’s Restaurant. Check out the Getaway Marina for a fishing expedition or rent bikes to get around the island while avoiding the traffic! If you’ve had too much sun, you can catch a movie and lunch or dinner at the Beach Theatre or try your luck on one of the casino boats, either the Big “M” Casino or the Leisure Lady Casino. The surrounding communities of Fort Myers, Naples and Sanibel Island have much to offer as well.

Beaches: Fort Myers Beach is the perfect spot for a beach-lover’s vacation. Here you will enjoy the calm waters of the Gulf of Mexico for family-friendly swimming and water activities, soft sandy beaches, and lots of sunshine. The beach runs all along the island, from Bowditch Point Regional Park at the north end to Lover’s Key State Park at the south end.

Shopping: While you won’t find a major mall or department store on the island, you will find a variety of shopping choices for your souvenir purchases, beach gear, men’s and women’s apparel and more. At the southern end of the island, you’ll want to stop in at the Book Nook, where new and used books are sold and you can exchange your used books for store credit toward your purchases. Nearby Sanibel Island is a shopper’s paradise, and you’ll want to stop at the Sanibel Tanger Factory Stores on the way.

Dining: Fort Myers Beach offers a variety of dining options, from fast food to ethnic specialties to fine dining. Many restaurants offer outdoor seating -- one good choice for a casual, moderately priced lunch or dinner is the Beached Whale, where you can dine rooftop with a beautiful view of the island and the gulf or enjoy live entertainment on the first floor. Another is the Beach Pierside Grill, which offers outdoor seating right at the beach and live entertainment. A personal favorite for breakfast is the Gulfshore Grill, which is also located on the beach and offers a panoramic gulf view. And for fine dining, you can’t miss with Channel Mark.

Accommodations: Those looking for lots of activity will want to stay at the north portion of the island just over the bridge (also known as Times Square), where you’ll find shopping, dining, beach activities and nightlife all within walking distance of the hotels and resorts. Those looking for a more relaxing vacation will want to stay south of the Times Square area.

Description

Located in Lee County along Southwest Florida's Gulf coast, Fort Myers is known as the "City of Palms" for its palm-lined streets. The major attractions are the homes of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, which are separated by a fence called "The Friendship Gate." The annual Edison Festival of Light Pageant celebrates the inventor's contributions to the city. For beach-goers, Fort Myers' beaches have a laid-back feel and act as a gateway to several islands, including Sanibel and Captiva Islands.

Fort Myers Beach Vacation Rentals

Fort Myers Beach is located in southwest Florida between Punta Rassa and Naples. A “down-to-earth” place, Fort Myers Beach occupies all of skinny Estero Island, and is known as the “world’s safest beach.” Fort Myers Beach vacations are popular among those who truly want to get away from it all. Do you belong in that category? If so, check out the many Fort Myers Beach vacation rentals available. From Fort Myers Beach oceanfront condos to fancy villas, you can find it here. A Fort Myers Beach family vacation is an especially great idea, as it will include just as much sand and sun as Sanibel and Captiva Islands, but at much more moderate prices. The intersection of San Carlos and Esteros Boulevards is an area packed with bars, restaurants, beach apparel shops, souvenir shops and hotels. It’s often called “Times Square” by the locals. The rest of Estero Island is much quieter, with oceanside cottages, quiet motels and lovely beach condos. Fort Myers Beach has several beach locations that are very popular for parasailing. Other activities include golf, swimming, sailing, fishing, kayaking, scuba diving and snorkeling. Fort Myers Beach also delivers nature excursions, waverunner tours to view the dolphins, as well as all types of boat rentals. Narrow Matanzas Pass separates Fort Myers Beach from the mainland. This bay is the area’s largest commercial fishing port, and is an official state aquatic preserve. Just south of Fort Myers Beach is the captivating Lover’s Key State Recreation Area. Access to this beach, which is known for its multitude of shells, is restricted to footpaths or a tractor-pulled tram through a bird-filled forest of mangrove trees. Fort Myers Beach vacations are a fabulous idea or beach and nature lovers. Renting Fort Myers Beach vacation rental homes by owner may not be your first instinct; but after you take a look at the beautiful Fort Myers Beach oceanfront condos and homes available, you wont think twice about avoiding the hotels! A Fort Myers Beach family vacation, honeymoon, wedding, family reunion, or spring break is best spent in Fort Myers Beach vacation rentals... not hotel rooms! So consider renting Fort Myers Beach vacation rental homes by owner this time around.
