Crystal Beach Attractions and Activities

History

Named after freedom fighter Simon Bolivar, the Bolivar Peninsula on which Crystal Beach sits, was first visited by a European in 1528. It was subsequently occupied by native American Indians, Spanish and Mexican Settlers and by Anglo republicans in the 1800's. It was a major port for smuggling and slave trade even after 1839 when the first settlers began to arrive. A lighthouse, completed in 1872 at Port Bolivar, provided refuge to 125 people protected there in 1900 during the devastating Galveston hurricane. With the completion of rail service in the early 1900's, Crystal Beach became established as a year-round family vacation spot.

Weather

There isn't a whole lot going on in Crystal Beach but it's great as a quiet base for sightseeing in the Tampa/St. Petersburg areas or even to go as far as Disneyworld.
