Welcome to Blue Mountain Beach Florida Vacation Rentals

Blue Mountain Beach Travel and Vacation Rental Overview

Old Indian legend has it that Blue Mountain Beach got its name from the blue haze you would see at dawn on the hills. The blankets of the blue wildflower Lupine caused the haze, which to the Indians looked like blue mountains on the beach Blue Mountain Beach is located between Santa Rosa Beach and Grayton Beach and is the highest point on the Gulf of Mexico in the United States. Accommodations include a wide variety of homes and condominiums with spectacular views of the coastline.

Blue Mountain Beach is situated on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico, nestled into the impressive sand dunes Mother Nature took hundreds of years to develop. It is by no means mountainous or blue, the sandy white dunes reaching an elevation of forty feet or so. However, it is impressive to see descending stairways to a Florida beach! Sea views and sounds from the hills of this upscale oceanfront village are what one would expect with white sandy shorelines bearing the endless crash of the rhythmic surf and bejeweled emerald waters blending into the dark blue of the deep sea. Inland in this primarily residential community, lush vegetation sets against hundreds of well-trimmed and landscaped family homes built along the dips and curves of the paved roadways.

The area celebrates the name "Florida Panhandle Pure & Simple" because of the clean and clear water, which appears vivid emerald-green due to its purity and the shallowness of the gulf.

"Mountain" is somewhat of a misnomer for a Florida landscape that is only 345 feet above sea level at its highest point (northern Walton County), but the first European settlers may have mistaken the Blue Mountain community's towering dunes for mountains after being at sea for months. They may also have been impressed by the lush vegetation covering the dunes, especially the spiky shape of the Gulf Coast lupine, which lives in the dune scrub along Florida's Emerald Coast. With its fuzzy blue leaves and purplish blue flowers that look like tiny sweet peas, it is easy to speculate that blue flowers covering tall dunes gave Blue Mountain its unusual name.

Blue Mountain Beach Attractions and Activities

History

Archaeological studies indicate that the Blue Mountains were formed around one million years ago as part of the Kosciusko Uplift during the Pliocene Epoch.

Pressure from the east raised the area upwards in a monoclinal fold, reaching an elevation of around three thousand feet to the top of the Blue Mountains where Mount Victoria is today.

In 1788 the Blue Mountains were originally named "Carmarthen Hills" and "Landsdowne Hills" by Governor Phillip, however, it wasn?t long after, that the distinctive blue haze surrounding the area saw the change in name to the Blue Mountains.

The Blue Mountains is densely populated by oil bearing Eucalyptus trees. The atmosphere is filled with finely dispersed droplets of oil, which, in combination with dust particles and water vapour, scatter short-wave length rays of light which are predominantly blue in colour.

  • Blue Mountain Beach Weather & Climate

The Northwest Florida Panhandle, in the region known as the "Emerald Coast," enjoys warm temperatures year round. The state of Florida, as a whole, is among the wettest states in the U.S., receiving at least 50 inches of rain annually, and the Panhandle region has the most rain of anyplace in the state. However, many of these showers and thunderstorms pass quickly and the sunshine prevails. Tropical winds from the south, along with the Gulf and abundant rain, create hot, humid conditions May through September. The rest of the year is much more comfortable, with mild days and cool nights, less humidity and less rain. Hurricane season officially lasts August through October, but most of these storms blow into the Atlantic and miss Florida entirely. In the case when one does reach shore, ample warning time is generally given for these storms.

    Blue Mountain Beach Vacation Rentals

Blue Mountain Beach is located in the South Walton area of Florida’s panhandle, a 200-mile stretch of silky white sand beaches, towering dunes, pine forests and crystal blue waters. Beautiful Blue Mountain Beach has the distinction of being the highest point on the Gulf Coast, which in Florida is only 345 feet above sea level. Legend has it that Indians first thought the blue haze on the hills and dunes looked like blue mountains on the beach, thus, the name, ?Blue Mountain Beach.? Blankets of rare, purplish-blue Lupines, which grow in only eight of Florida’s counties, cause the haze. Blue Mountain Beach marks the beginning of the Eastern Lake Hike/Bike Trail, which meanders past coastal dunes, woodlands and through the rest of the South Walton beach communities. Mysterious Draper Lake is an impressive, scenic body of water in Blue Mountain, but has no public access to it. Alligator Lake and Big Red Fish Lakes offer fishing, kayaking and wildlife viewing. The community of Blue Mountain is virtually unspoiled, and includes a wide variety of vacation homes and condominiums with spectacular coastal views, but only a few commercial businesses. However, other nearby South Walton beach towns offer plenty of shopping and dining options. The town of Miramar is famous for its award-winning restaurants and more than 100 designer outlet shops, while nearby Sandestin offers golf and its own upscale shopping village.
